5 Ways to Beat the Heat in Chattanooga

2015 Regulations Affect Homeowner Expense

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced two new regulations that impacted the state of Tennessee on January 1, 2015. These two new regulations involve homeowner’s water heaters and air conditioners.

Raised Efficiency Standards for Air Conditioners

The seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration has increased from 13 to 14. It is based on the amount a unit cools and the amount of  energy it uses throughout the hottest months of the year. The newly required seasonal energy efficiency ration of 14 units means an average increase in cost anywhere from 55-65 percent. Starting next year on July 1, 2016, all air conditioner units that are installed are required to be a 14 or higher.

Water Heaters are Expected to have Higher Energy Ratings

Starting on April 16, 2015,the department of energy will require higher energy ratings on almost all water heaters. Water heaters will be designed, manufactured and installed differently to increase long term energy savings. Information from RIS Media: http://rismedia.com/2015-01-01/new-regulations-affect-homeowners-in-2015/ lake_breeze

Top 5 Ways to Help with Energy Efficiency

  1. Block Sun from your Windows.
Closing your blinds and curtains throughout the hottest times of the day can help reduce heat entering into your home by as much as 45%, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
  2. Give Your A/C some TLC
Keep reminders on your calendars to know when to replace your air filter each  month during the spring and summer. This will help make sure you get the best quality airflow with more efficient and effective cooling throughout your home. Have a certified specialist check your air ducts for leaks because leaks can “reduce a system’s efficiency as much as 15% according to the U.S. Department of Energy.”
  3. Let Your Technology Rest
While your computers, both desktop and laptop, video game players and other technology devices are running, they produce heat. So make it a practice to shut down your computer systems and other devices, or set up a “sleep mode” so that after being idle for more than 10 minutes they shut down.
  4. Take a Step Back in Time
Cut down on your energy costs by lowering your usage of appliances that use heat such as clothes dryer, dishwasher and oven. Instead hang your clothes out to dry, air dry your dishes and use your grill for cooking on those nice warm days!
  5. Use a Fan
Although a fan does not lower the temperature inside your home, if you let it run along with the air conditioning unit, it can make it feel cooler because it evaporates sweat and spreads the air throughout the room. Also, make sure to turn on your vent when you take those hot showers/baths to help reduce humidity.

Top 9 Things to Purchase in Your Kitchen

Stock Your Kitchen Right

While there are the basics that every kitchen must have-microwave, silverware, dishes-there are some things that every chef must have. Whether you’re the gourmet chef or the from-the-box kind of cook, these are the definite must haves for every kitchen. celtic drive kitchen 2

  1. Stand Mixer: Every kitchen needs a stand mixer. You can opt for the professional brand Kitchen Aid or just go for the off brand from your local cookware store, but definitely need this appliance on your kitchen counter. Whether you’re going to whip up your grandma’s chocolate cake recipe from scratch or just need to make some creamy mashed potatoes, this is a definite must.
  2. Stoneware: I couldn’t live without my Pampered Chef pizza stone and bar pan. Stoneware is easy to care for and clean. I use my pizza stone for everything from the obvious, pizza, to cookies and biscuits. The bar pan is great for cooking bacon in the oven or even making some oven fried chicken. No kitchen is complete without a good set of stoneware.
  3. Knife Set: A good set of knives will definitely come in handy. Think about that first Thanksgiving at your new home, you’re going to need a good trimming knife to carve the turkey. Not to mention when you have your first cookout and get ready to cut into those yummy steaks, steak knives are a must!
  4. Cutting Boards: You don’t want to scar up your brand new countertops so a cutting board is something you must have. I opt to have a plastic one for fruits and vegetables and a marble or granite one for meats and fish. Why you ask? Bacteria can settle in the cuts of the plastic cutting boards and are harder to disinfect so save those plastic ones for your chicken!
  5. Crockpot: Every kitchen needs a crockpot. There are those workdays you know will last longer than normal so a crockpot comes in handy so you can come home to a warm meal that’s ready to eat. Just put your ingredients in, turn it on and when you get home, your home will be filled with the wonderful aroma of a slow cooked meal.
  6. Colander: Colanders aren’t just for draining your favorite pasta. You can use them for rinsing fruits and vegetables or even for straining things. There are variety of types and sizes to choose from and easily store inside one another to save cabinet space.
  7. Spoons and Spatulas: You need a good variety of large spoons and spatulas. Whether it’s just to stir things up while you cook or for serving, make sure you have what you need. You can easily purchase sets to help save a little cash.
  8. Food Chopper: A food chopper is a great gadget to have. It helps finely chop your fruits and vegetables for any meal. Most are easy to use and easy to clean.
  9. Can Opener: Opening cans is necessary so make sure you have a good one. Electric can openers are the most commonly used and you can get them in several colors and even ones that fit under your cabinet. I opt for the Pampered Chef hand can opener because it leaves the edges smooth and is safe for my kids to use.
